Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong has confessed he would be interested in joining Liverpool.

Frimpong, 23, is on the radar of most of Europe’s top sides after an outrageous season which has yielded nine goals and ten assists in all competitions for Xabi Alonso’s Bundesliga leaders, with the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid often touted to move for the Dutch international.

Liverpool are expected to try do business with Leverkusen this summer over manager Alonso, who is their top target to replace departing boss Jurgen Klopp, and it seems as though Frimpong would be interested in following his current chief to Anfield.

Asked by Ziggo Sport whether he would want to make the move to Liverpool as well, Frimpong said: “A great club, with history. That would be great. Who knows what the future will bring?”

It has been widely reported that Frimpong’s contract, which runs until 2028, includes a release clause worth €40m (£34.2m).

Frimpong came through the academy at Manchester City but never actually played for Liverpool’s Premier League rivals before being sold to Celtic in 2019.

He’d spend 18 months in Scotland before joining Leverkusen in 2021, and has now firmly established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young right-backs under Alonso’s tutelage.

“We all trust the coach and know we can do something big this season. We all want to win a trophy, and the coach helps with his playing style,” Frimpong said of Alonso. “He has also worked under top trainers and can now combine those experiences himself. Everyone enjoys the playing style.

“I do my best for the team, whatever I can help with. Attacking, defending, goals, assists, I help my teammates and they help me. I will play the way the coach wants, at Leverkusen and also with the national team, if I get a chance there.”
