Serie A | Salernitana 1-2 Verona

Tomas Suslov

Hellas Verona got the victory they needed with Tomas Suslov and Michael Folorunsho to secure their Serie A safety against rock bottom Salernitana.

Michael Folorunsho returned from suspension, but Thomas Henry sat out a two-match ban for Hellas. The hosts remained decimated by injuries including Nwankwo Simy, Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi, Guillermo Ochoa, Jerome Boateng and Norbert Gyomber.

Vincenzo Fiorillo showed brave goalkeeping on Tijjani Noslin sliding in and a Suslov free kick, but Suslov did give Verona the lead when he flicked it over Junior Sambia, exchanged passes and drilled into the far bottom corner from outside the box.

The Salernitana goalkeeper was also tested by a Folorunsho’s deflected snapshot, but as the move continued, his teammates were far too sluggish in their attempts to clear, allowing Noslin to thread through for Darko Lazovic and it was rolled across for the Folorunsho tap-in.

Noslin blasted off target when sent clear by Suslov straight after the restart, then his header was parried by Fiorillo, while Loum Tchaouna risked more than a yellow card for a reaction foul on Serdar.

Folorunsho almost added a third late on when his scorcher from outside the area smacked against the base of the far post.

Salernitana did at least get one back in the final minute when Nicolo Pierozzi hit a ferocious effort against the inside of the upright from a corner and Giulio Maggiore turned in the rebound. This set up a nervy stoppages for Verona, who regretted wasting all those earlier chances.

This result takes Verona up to 37 points, so the final relegation spot is between Udinese, Frosinone and Empoli.
